Five of our Year 12 and Year 13 Science students had the incredible opportunity to take part in the UK-Japan Young Scientist Workshop during the summer break, bringing together post-16 students from schools across the UK and Japan.
Working in small international teams, our students collaborated on real-life science projects guided by university specialists. The experience gave them a fascinating insight into scientific research in a university setting, while encouraging them to explore different ways of thinking, problem-solving and working collaboratively.
This year’s projects were:
- Organic photochromic molecules
- Let's Generate X-rays
- Dye Your Own Blue with Chemistry — Indigo Synthesis and Fabric Works
- Autonomous AI Lab: Deciphering the Universe and Earth through Data Science
- Rutherford Scattering Experiment
- Communicating Science! Who, What, and How?
- Mask Science and Public Health: How Do Masks Protect Us?
Beyond the workshop, students had the opportunity to explore Tokyo and experience Japanese culture through a range of visits and evening activities. They also developed friendships and connections with students from Japan, making the experience both academically rewarding and personally memorable.
For our students studying A-level Biology, Chemistry and Physics, the workshop provided a fantastic opportunity to extend their learning beyond the classroom and gain valuable experience that will support their future studies and aspirations in science, engineering and related disciplines.
